enHanced connEctivity with aeRial networks in eMergency EventS

HERMES aims towards employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that carry telecommunication devices, e.g., antennas or metasurfaces, to complement existing networks. By redistributing network resources on-demand, the project seeks to enhance wireless connectivity and ensure that all users within a targeted dense network can be served. In addition to improving connectivity in everyday scenarios, the proposed framework also has the potential to handle emergency situations. For example, in the event of a natural disaster, such as an earthquake that destroys the ground telecommunication infrastructure, UAVs can rapidly create an ad hoc network to assist rescue efforts during the first hours until the infrastructure is restored. However, before this vision can be fully realized, there are several issues that must be addressed: Issue #1: The UAV communications should be enhanced. Issue #2: Reliable and autonomous UAV orchestration is crucial. Issue #3: Energy supply and availability is a major issue in UAV networks. Thus, a better understanding of UAV networks is needed in order to fully realize their potential benefits. The HERMES objectives are: i) To define a UAV communication framework that provides a sustainable and effective operation in terms of coverage both in stand-alone and complementary scenarios. ii) To devise an orchestration framework that provides a reliable UAV network operation, while proving that this solution can be profitable. iii) To research and develop state-of-the-art (SoA) technologies that allow an uninterrupted and autonomous aerial network operation. In the end, all the novel communication and hardware technologies were fused into one integrated platform for orchestration and monitoring of the UAV system.

Цел на проекта

Despite the development of novel technologies such as millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications and 5G New Radio, current cellular networks will face difficulties to serve their users in ultra-dense scenarios due to the unprecedented growth of the mobile data traffic from various emerging data services. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that carry telecommunication equipment are able to enhance the wireless connectivity in such scenarios through an on-demand redistribution of the network resources. However, their progress is still hindered by three significant issues, i.e., the lack of a consistent UAV communication framework, the energy supply, and the efficient orchestration. To that end, the HERMES project proposes a holistic approach to tackle the limitations of aerial networks by employing state-of-the-art tools and a coherent research methodology. More specifically, mmWave, optical wireless, and sub-6 GHz communication technologies along with novel multiple access techniques will be investigated to define a comprehensive communication architecture. Solar-powered charging posts with wireless power transfer capabilities deployed around the serving area will be proposed and studied to encounter the energy supply issue. Also, artificial intelligence-based tools will be leveraged to provide an efficient and profitable orchestration of the UAVs by taking into account weather and user mobility patterns. In the end of the project, a proof-of-concept demonstration and a techno-economic analysis will unravel the intrinsic characteristics of aerial networks to showcase the significant advantages of the HERMES vision that will aid the fellow to network with industry and academia, and to empower him to become a research and development innovator.
