Wanderlust is the passion for discovering

Wanderlust, Zaragoza ERN in its 10th edition, was designed to aproach researchers to general public, and celebrated in very especial circumstances due to the pandemic situation we are facing. Our starting point was the Wanderlust spirit understood as the passion to discover the unknown, so we planned an event in which the research would represent that passion to know and discover new things. We wanted to create a unique experience where both children and adults could live and experience “the adventure of discovering”. Due to the especial circumstances we are facing the activites were planned in a kind of “big” event on the 27th of November and 3 other pre-events. All activites had to be designed taking into account the covid19 restrictions that were established by the goverment. The main objective of the event was still to show the work of researchers, although this year activities had to be different to keep the covid19 restrictions and so things needed to be shown differently. For most of the people, the researchers’ work is kind of unknown, or they are not sure of what they do. Problably they wouldn’t know how to define it if they were asked to. To change this, researchers took their work to the street to show people what they do, how they do it, what is the importance and dimension of their job. On a more detailed level, the objectives of the program are: • Show the dimension of research and the importance of the researchers’ job in our daily life. • Show the importance of research, how society cannot move forward without research • Generate interest and arouse curiosity for research in the general public. • Display the fun side of research • Foster scientific vocations in youngsters.

Wanderlust is the name of the European Researchers Night in Zaragoza. This year 2020 it will celebrate the 11th edition. Wanderlust is a concept that includes the core values of research: the excitement of discovering, exploring, researching and the emotion of sharing this stimulating work with society. Wanderlust is the largest scientific festival in Spain and consists of a true festival of culture that combines different kinds of activities and performances to get all audiences, from 3 to 99 years old. Both the event and the program of activities are designed to value and disseminate the figure and valuable work of our researchers. In order to get this goal, we carry out synergies and innovative experiences that combine research with other cultural disciplines. The success of the project is based on the experience of the organizing team. Esciencia is a company specialized in science outreach with more than 13 years of experience and with a multidisciplinary team of 30 employees. We have been the organizers in the past 10 editions. We have the “know-how” to make this event a success of participants and impact scope, as well as satisfaction of the visitors. We use a proved methodology whose strengths are: the event's communication campaign, communication advice and training in didactic and communication tools to researchers to set up their performances, and the evaluation procces that allows us to enforce the suggestions of the public and to improve the event. As a result of this experience we have a network of stakeholders, sponsors, researchers and suppliers that guarantee the achievement of th objectives. Our event has become a national reference. We have created a powerful network of contacts and collaborate with several projects. In this edition we improve our rates of participation and impact and we will reach 375,000 people with the promotional campaign and 10,000 direct participants in the event.
