Shaping Innovative Designs for Sustainable Tissue Engineering Products

Shaping Innovative Designs for Sustainable Tissue Engineering Products - SHIFT (https://r1.unitn.it/shift/) represents the second phase of SCA-RISE REMIX (GA 778078 - 2017-2021) and aims to build on the breakthroughs and developments achieved by REMIX. REMIX researched and confirmed the potential of natural origin material (i.e., silk proteins, collagen, keratin, chitosan, and marine organism-derived polymers) for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine applications. Starting from these natural origin materials, SHIFT aims to design innovative sustainable natural-based constructs that enhance angiogenesis, focusing on the treatment of skin and bone. Prototypes will be fabricated considering scalability, costs, and regulatory issues. The target applications of the products are tissues with fast angiogenesis requirements or control, such as large bone defects and skin wounds. Both cases addressed are relevant, since the aging population who suffer from major degenerative diseases of bone and skin is rising globally, whether there are no current therapeutic solutions for patients. The strategies implemented to achieve the goal are: • producing prototypes considering regulative and quality control framework (GMP and ISO) in close collaboration with the industry and clinicians. • standardization of the protocols for purification of raw materials from the waste of the textile and food industry, and the creation of new opportunities for re-using industrial waste; • application of the principles of green chemistry; • extensive training program for ESRs (winter/summer schools, seminars) covering different topics, such as TERM, technologies, regulations for product development, spin-offs, and venture capitals. • Dissemination of results in International context, scientific as well as biomed companies.

Цел на проекта

Shaping Innovative Products for Sustainable Tissue Engineering Strategies - SHIFT is the follow up of MSCA-RISE REMIX (GA 778078). While REMIX researched and confirmed the potential of natural origin material such as silk proteins, collagen, keratin and marine organism-derived polymers for use in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, SHIFT aims to take the research a step forward and design innovative natural-based, scalable constructs that enhance angiogenesis for the treatment of widespread chronic pathologies, such as large defect in bone and cartilage and the treatment of chronic wounds (ex. diabetic ulcer). Prototypes will be fabricated considering scalability, costs, regulatory issues.Multiple strategies will be used to achieve this aim:- pre-assessment of the regulative framework for TERM products and close collaboration with the industry; - fabrication in accordance with current GMP and ISO quality management Systems-requirements- standardization of the protocols for purification of raw materials from the waste of textile and food industry for the production of these prototypes, using medical-grade, commercially-available raw materials as benchmark. This may lead to the opening of a new opportunity for re-using industrial waste which is currently disposed of.- application of the principles of Green Chemistry to reduce the environmental impact of the research and production of the prototypes. An extensive training program will be offered to ESRs to set the best conditions for successful performance. The program will be offered through summer schools and online seminars and will cover a variety of topics related to TERM, technologies, regulations for product development. A special highlight will be devoted to product-development, spin-off, venture capitals, to provide junior researchers with knowledge and skills that may allow them to become profiles capable to successfully transfer ideas and innovations from academia to the industry.
