Накратко на български
Метални комплекси се използват за създаване на нови полиестери от отпадъчни газове и възобновяеми ресурси. Тези материали помагат за намаляване на зависимостта от изкопаемите горива и подобряват възможностите за рециклиране на пластмасите.

Controlled metal-catalysed polymerisation of SO2-derived sources to high performance and recyclable materials
The plastic industry is facing numerous challenges to adapt to more sustainable practices, including the phase-out of fossil fuel resources, the minimization of all burdens to the environment and the potential toxicity to humans, and the increase in the amount of recycled (recirculated) plastics material after use. However, new technologies and fundamental discoveries are required to overcome these global barriers. PolySO2 was designed to tackle some of these issues in an unconventional way, that is, by targeting the polymerization of underutilized feedstocks, some from waste gases or with potential to be manufactured from renewable resources. In addition, our goal was to obtain polymeric materials that could address the end-of-life of plastic products once they had become waste by providing chemical routes for their degradation. At the core of these goals was the exploitation of metal complexes developed in the group of Professor Charlotte Williams at the University of Oxford, who has pioneered in the conversion of CO2 and epoxides for the production of polycarbonates. Dr. Vidal developed and utilized earth-abundant metal complexes, including zinc(II), magnesium(II), potassium(I), and aluminium(III), to explore new directions that could provide access to unprecedented materials designed for high performance and recyclability. Indeed, the work carried out during this project unveiled novel functional polyesters from the ring-opening copolymerization of functional anhydrides with epoxides, whose chemical and physical attributed could find interesting applications in biomedicine for drug delivery, imaging, or sensing. He has also open the path for their implementation as high performance elastomers with improved end-of-life options thanks to their reprocessability. Finally, Dr. Vidal also demonstrated the potential to depolymerize these materials under hydrolytic conditions, proving that new polyester materials can perform as well as traditional commodity polymers but avoiding the pervasiveness of their wastes.

Цел на проекта
The burn of sulphur-rich fossil fuels continues to produce sulphur dioxide as a polluting gas, with high risks to humans and the environment. In PolySO2, we aim to uncover new controlled routes to attain the direct metal-catalysed copolymerisation of sulphur dioxide and sulfone-derived sources in combination with carbon dioxide and other oxygenated monomers. Our goal is to open new sustainable platforms for making unconventional materials from renewable resources that are designed for high performance and recyclability. Moreover, our study of the reaction mechanism will improve our fundamental understanding of the polymerisation steps, which will lead to the design of better metal catalysts and reaction conditions. First, we will investigate the ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) and ring-opening alternating copolymerisation (ROCOP) of these previously unexplored monomer sources. These methods will provide with unprecedented strategies to introduce custom linkages (aliphatic and aromatic) in the main-chain of newly developed polymers: poly(sulfite)s, poly(sulfonate)s, poly(sulfonic ester)s and block copolymers. Secondly, we will seek the best depolymerising strategies of such linear chains in an effort to demonstrate full chemical recyclability. Finally, we will apply the newly developed polymeric materials in the construction of robust elastomers (via phase segregation) and resins (via crosslinking) as well as their thermo-mechanical analysis. This action will promote the return of Dr. Fernando Vidal to the European scientific arena after 8 years in the USA and his retention as an independent researcher in polymer chemistry. His planned work in the group of Prof. Charlotte Williams at the University of Oxford and collaboration with her network of industrial partners will serve as the ideal launching mechanism for his future scientific endeavors.
