Накратко на български

Антителата IgY се изследват като средство за ограничаване на метана, произвеждан от микроорганизми (археи) в стомаха на преживащите животни. Намаляването на тези емисии помага за постигането на екологичните цели на Европейския съюз и света.

Use of IgY to reduce methane emission from rumen archaea

Enteric methane (CH4) is formed in the ruminant fore-stomach (rumen) by methanogens (archaea) and is the largest source of anthropogenic CH41. Various strategies to inhibit methanogen activities in the rumen have failed or had limited success, due to low efficacy, poor selectivity, resistance from the archaea, or toxicity of the compounds in the host species. IGYMERA is a novel and interdisciplinary project that aims to reduce methane emissions from the rumen based on: archaea genomes, key enzymes in methane production, IgY action against rumen archaea, and success in early programming of the rumen microbiome. By providing a platform for integrating the skillsets of the researcher (A. Morales, ER) and host supervisor (J. M. de la Lastra, HS), IGYMERA will approach this key problem in a highly innovative, timely and interdisciplinary manner. Reducing methane production in ruminants will be a great innovation and contribution within the EU’s political and environmental objectives, and worldwide.

Цел на проекта

The IGYMERA proposal is aimed at exploring novel strategies to reduce methane production in ruminants. Our innovative proposal differs from other past strategies. Instead of using whole archaea for the development of antibodies, we will raise low-cost, specific and non-toxic IgY polyclonal antibodies against the key membrane targets responsible for methane production, or for their ability to produce a significant reduction in methanogenic microorganism populations in the rumen. To identify such targets, we plan to use state-of-the-art proteomic tools and molecular cloning techniques for the production of recombinant proteins to be used for hen immunization. We also plan to test an early intervention approach in the rumen of small ruminants (goats), to enhance the reduction in their microbial methanogen population during adult life.
