Digitizing Women of Medieval Iberian Historiography

Historiography in the Middle Ages generally downplayed women’s societal and political roles, and the additional focus on royalty often led to omission of other strata. This distorted image, however, is not limited to the medieval society. Only a few decades ago, researchers were not as interested in various, usually marginalized or misrepresented, groups, and there is still a significant gender gap in our collective cultural memory, especially when it comes to non-English medieval women. This interdisciplinary project intentionally reframed the male-centered narrative to shed light on various digital ways medieval women from the Iberian culture should be studied. The corpus consists of the Crónica de Castilla (ca. 1300, Kingdom of Castile-León) and the Portuguese genealogical work Livro de Linhagens do Deão (ca. 1343). The first work is one of the most widely disseminated chronicles of the Iberian Peninsula, and the latter belongs to the three great Portuguese genealogies written before 1350. While there are important studies on women in both of these works, they are usually limited to a few documented individuals and/or studied intertextually. This project is the first one to explore women and gender-based aspects in both works via digital humanities methods and tools. By shifting the spotlight on underexplored aspects via digital approaches, the project looked for transparent and sustainable ways of advancing research. Moreover, considering the limited presence of medieval women in our modern-day cultural expressions and curricula, another aim of the project was to place its output in the context of cultural heritage and use it for educational purposes in a number of ways.

The interdisciplinary project “Digitizing Women of Medieval Iberian Historiography” (=FEMIber) aims to explore gender in the Iberian Middle Ages in ways that embrace emerging technologies while fostering long-lasting ties with the society and the cultural heritage in general. The project aims to study female representations in the ""Crónica de Castilla"" (Castile-León) and the Portuguese ""Livro de Linhagens"" via methods of Digital Humanities. The fellowship will take place at the Department of Humanities, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) under the supervision of Prof. María Morrás. During the 24 months, a digital prosopographical database of the represented women will be generated (= objective 1), and then the subsets of data will be visualized to explore patterns, (dis)continuities and tendencies of the employed elements for sociopolitical and familial order in the two kingdoms through the lens of gender (= objective 2). When it comes to trans-sectoral training and mobility, after completing an online specialization in curatorial practices, a 6-month placement will be carried out at the company DIGIBÍS (Madrid), the Spanish heritage-digitization pioneer. During the placement, under the supervision by Xavier Agenjo, trainings in patrimony digitization will take place in order to gain new skills and explore the project’s potential in the digital Cultural Heritage field. This experience, together with the specialization in curatorial practices and the museum exposition, form part of the objective 3, dedicated to promote and advance the project´s links to the GLAM-sector, as well as facilitate public engagement and its use beyond the academia.
