Touch-enabled Tactile Internet Training Network and Open Source Testbed
The Tactile Internet (TI) envisions the communication of touch, transforming the Internet from a medium of information exchange to one enabling real-time physical interaction and manipulation over distance. With haptic feedback, TI enables applications such as bilateral teleoperation and telerobotics, allowing humans to perform complex tasks in distant or hazardous environments. Importantly, it democratizes access to skills and expertise, just as the current Internet democratised access to information, enhancing inclusion across gender, age, culture, and ability. Often referred to as the "Internet of Touch, Control, and Skills," TI opens a new paradigm for human-machine and human-human interaction, with disruptive potential across sectors including industrial control, healthcare, skill training, e-commerce, and immersive entertainment. The Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network project, TOAST, focuses on the emerging, interdisciplinary field of the Tactile Internet. It will train 10 doctoral candidates (DCs) through a comprehensive programme combining scientific, technological, and transferable skills training via lectures and hands-on exercises. International and inter-sectoral research mobility across six European countries will expose DCs to diverse environments and cutting-edge research. By bringing together leading academic and industrial partners with complementary expertise, the project aims to develop holistic solutions for the Tactile Internet. Aligned with EU strategic goals in digitalisation, sustainability, and next-generation connectivity, the project also contributes to the Green Transition through innovative digital technologies. The research objectives of TOAST include (1) Develop a multi-purpose Open Source TI Testbed based on the IEEE P1918.1; (2) Design haptic technologies for communication including new kinaesthetic and tactile codecs. (3) Joint optimisation of compression, control and networking. (4) Design Edge Intelligence Engine to enhance reliability and agility in TI services. To achieve these objectives, the research program is structured into four dedicated technical work packages: WP1- Use cases requirements and testbed, WP2- Haptics for communication, WP3- Agile communication and networking, and WP4- TI Edge Intelligence Engine.

Цел на проекта
The touch-enabled Tactile Internet (TI), also known as the Internet of Skills, is anticipated to bring an unprecedented economic and social impact to the digitized world. So far, it has attracted tremendous interest from industry, standardisation bodies and the research community, and is fully aligned with the goals of Horizon Europe. TOAST will train the next generation of early-stage researchers (ESRs) to tackle the critical challenges of TI through interdisciplinary research. Addressing these challenges requires the ESRs to gain a broad understanding of haptics, teleoperation, haptic communication, networking, edge computing, machine learning and human perception. By bringing together world-class researchers from academia and industry, TOAST will (a) contribute to structuring doctoral research training in EU and consolidating currently fragmented trainings into one DN on TI; (b) provide an innovative training program to the ESRs with a balance of fundamental research questions, pragmatic industrial research perspectives, interdisciplinary cooperation through the development of a joined testbed, which will not only benefit the ESRs by enabling remote training and experiments, demonstrations and public engagement, but also generate stronger synergies and extend TOAST’s impact beyond its conclusion; (c) develop E2E solutions for the TI by leveraging the complementary competences of the partners, which will be transferred into IPR, new products and services; and (d) contribute to the development of the ESRs’ skills and network, enhancing their career perspectives and employability. Importantly, the industrial partners will actively contribute to TOAST's training programme and bridge the gap between fundamental research and applied research to ensure effective exploitation of the research results. TOAST will empower the ESRs with unique competences, while paving the way for other researchers to work on TI, which will assure Europe’s leading position in TI worldwide.
