Накратко на български
Влиянието на видеоплатформи като YouTube върху тревожността при бременни жени е в центъра на анализа. Разбирането на този процес помага да се намалят рисковете от преждевременни раждания и следродилна депресия.

Pregnancy- and Childbirth-Related Media Use to Support Maternal Mental Health
Studies show that up to one in three pregnant women suffer from pregnancy-related anxiety, or excessive worry, distress or fear concerning pregnancy, fetal health, birth and labor, and the postpartum period. This is related to costly adverse pregnancy outcomes with long-lasting consequences, such as pre-term births and postpartum depression. Pregnant women increasingly use the internet and social media to seek information regarding pregnancy and childbirth, and many care providers are worried about the impact of digital media use on their clients’ mental wellbeing. Yet, the actual impact of online media use in pregnancy is rarely studied. The goal of this project is to understand the impact of video-based digital media platforms such as YouTube on pregnancy-related anxiety. YouTube can play a unique role in women’s health because of its attractive, engaging and easily understandable audiovisual presentation of information, and mix of healthcare professionals and regular users sharing their personal experiences and educational information. Moreover, YouTube is the most widely used social medium, as 95% of 18-49-year-olds use it. To understand the role of YouTube in pregnancy-related anxiety, this project is centered around two research objectives. The first objective is to understand how pregnancy- and childbirth-related content on YouTube can fulfill different needs for women with pregnancy-related anxiety. To understand how exposure to pregnancy- and childbirth-related content can affect PRA, we need to start by improving our understanding of how different types of pregnancy- and childbirth-related YouTube content address different needs of these mentally vulnerable women. The second objective is to elucidate the underlying processes of the association between exposure to pregnancy- and childbirth-related content and pregnancy-related anxiety. To improve our understanding of how exposure to health information on YouTube can play a role in maternal mental health, it is important to study which underlying mechanisms explain how exposure to pregnancy- and childbirth-related information affects pregnancy-related anxiety.

Цел на проекта
This interdisciplinary research project is situated on the crossroads of womens health and media psychology. The supervisor and the fellow, will combine their expertise to study how exposure to pregnancy- and childbirth-related content on the popular social media platform YouTube can affect pregnancy-related anxiety (PRA). We know from the womens health literature that pregnancy-related anxiety is a serious issue and many pregnant women seek health information online, and we know from the media psychology literature that seeking online health information can affect cognitions and behaviors, but these two fields of research remain disconnected. By bridging the two research fields, the scattered research will be systematized and extended. We set forth 2 objectives, each comprising three research questions: to improve our understanding of how pregnancy- and childbirth-related content on YouTube can fulfill different needs for women with PRA (objective 1), and to elucidate the underlying processes of the association between exposure to pregnancy- and childbirth-related content and PRA (objective 2). To reach our objectives, we will use a multimethodological approach, in which we combine semi-structured interviews (Work package 1, objective 1) and a longitudinal panel study following a cohort of women throughout their pregnancy (WP2, objective 2). The longitudinal panel study will be incorporated in the large scale mobile application-based Mom2B project currently running at the Uppsala University, which combines automatically collected digital phenotyping data, self-report questionnaires, and objective information from national health registers. This project will significantly improve our understanding of how social media can be strategically used by researchers and health workers to improve public health, but also of how peers and influencers on social media can informally and often unintentionally play a role in their followers health behaviors and experiences.
