Global food security is increasingly threatened by climate extremes such as droughts and heatwaves, which can cause simultaneous crop failures across multiple major agricultural regions. Yet, where, when, and why such synchronized failures occur remains poorly understood. The project will address this critical knowledge gap, focusing on four staple crops—maize, wheat, soybean, and rice. By advancing the science of concurrent agricultural extremes, the project aims to identify the global patterns of yield failure synchronizations and to uncover the climatic and atmospheric drivers behind them. Ultimately, this will improve our ability to anticipate these events and support coordinated risk management for food insecure regions. The fellowship will also provide interdisciplinary training in sustainability science, strengthening my independent research leadership at the interface of climate and agriculture.
