DeConstruct aims at reconsidering the theory of Greek and Roman architecture through a new type of source that long eluded researchers: “blueprints” are barely visible construction drawings, incised lines which once stood out against a colored, now vanished background. They were finely scored, with ruler and compass, at a 1 to 1 scale, into the marble of famous buildings such as the temple of Apollo at Didyma and the Mausoleum of Augustus at Rome. They disrupt a theory of architecture that claims the formulaic nature of Greek temples allowed them to be built without drawing.In spite of pioneering study cases carried out in the 80s and 90s by L. Haselberger, the general use of blueprints in classical Antiquity remains underestimated and the overall theory unchallenged. Bolstered by recent discoveries, and the methodology she developed, including the first application of the digital method of RTI on blueprints, the researcher can surpass previous, scattered research and disrupt latent assumptions. In this 2-year project at UNIL, where adequate career planning, training and support including high-performance GIS is planned, DeConstruct will reexamine the role of drawing in Classical architectural design based on a corpus of about 200 drawings spanning the Mediterranean over 1000 years.The time-span of the project will allow the fellow to enhance her preliminary list of 2015, with new drawings spotted in the field, in archives and publications. She will conduct expeditions in the host country, Switzerland, and around, in Spain, France, Austria, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. She will also host the first conference on ancient blueprints, with interdisciplinary perspectives, in order to develop a working group and an online public database, gathering together scholars, new drawings, and interpretations in Open Access conference publication. DeConstruct will reveal the key role of drawing at the intersection of theory and practice in Classical and European art history.
