IMPACT-IT is an ambitious European Doctoral Network that addresses critical societal challenges related to energy efficiency in Information Technologies (ITs). This interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral initiative combines leading expertise in magnetism–central to modern data storage–with emerging brain-inspired ionic concepts to develop next-generation memory and computing paradigms, including neuromorphic, probabilistic, Ising, and reservoir systems. The network focuses on the design, fabrication and device integration of novel magneto-ionic materials, from thin films to complex 2D and 3D architectures. By exploiting voltage-driven ion motion to precisely tailor magnetic properties (e.g., anisotropy, coercivity, magnetization) and spin configurations (e.g., vortex states, domain walls, skyrmions), IMPACT-IT aims to significantly reduce power consumption in future IT systems. These developments align with Horizon Europe’s Green Deal objectives, coupling technological innovation with energy sustainability and paving the way toward ultra-efficient computing technologies. The consortium comprises 13 Beneficiaries and 10 Associated Partners across 10 EU Member States, the UK, and the USA, including 8 industrial partners (e.g., Singulus, SPIN-ION, Openchip, HP Enterprise) and expertise spanning Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, and Computer Science. Diversity is a priority, with 43% female PhD supervisors and co-supervisors. IMPACT-IT targets seamless translation of frontier research into real-world applications and marketable technologies. A core component of IMPACT-IT is its multifaceted training program, combining world-class research with transferable skills development (career planning, entrepreneurship, intellectual property management, etc.). Through continuous peer mentoring, the network will deliver a diverse and gender-balanced cohort of highly qualified IT specialists, capable of effectively addressing future global challenges in academia, industry, and beyond.
