Цел на проекта
ANTHIFC investigates the tensions between anthropocentrism and its rejection in global speculative fiction (1960s-present). Anthropocentrism is the idea that human beings occupy a central place in existence. This idea can take various connotations, such as ethical or epistemological. ANTHFIC explores how the formal features of literary narrative enable or constrain contemporary fiction’s openness to ecological and nonhuman perspectives. At the same time, it problematizes theoretical frameworks that see humanist concepts and values as anthropocentric and that are highly influential in contemporary literary theory (for example, new materialism and posthumanism). Pursuing this reappraisal, ANTHFIC opens up an entirely new horizon for the study of (anti)humanism in fiction. Thus, the project innovatively shows how the aesthetic achievements of literary works engaging with the nonhuman depend on the dynamic negotiation between anthropocentrism and its rejection, and between the philosophical and historical permutations of humanist and anti-humanist thinking, rather than on the sidelining of either perspective. This interdisciplinary project will be undertaken under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Ercolino (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice - Italy), a leading scholar in comparative literature and critical theory, and Prof. Kate Marshall (University of Notre Dame - USA), an expert in speculative fiction and media and technology studies. The project includes two four-month secondments: at the University of Oslo (Norway) with Prof. Karin Kukkonen and at Ghent University (Belgium) with Prof. Marco Caracciolo.
