Ensuring water quality and safety requires effectively detecting emerging contaminants, which present significant risks to both human health and the environment. Current sensing technologies for detecting emerging contaminants are under research and continuously developing. Still, critical barriers exist to their implementation and use, such as high costs, lack of reliability, and difficulties in implementation in real world. Moreover, the environmental detection of several emerging contaminants like PFAS, microplastics and pathogens is still a challenge due to their complex nature (PFAS, pathogens), chemical inertness (MPs, NPs), and their high dilution rates in the environment (MPs, NPs, pathogens). The AMORE Doctoral Network will comprise 15 Early Career Researchers who will pursue these challenges by gaining scientific knowledge and advanced skills to significantly advance in environmental monitoring of challenging emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. Four scientific objectives set the foundation of this ambitious network. 1) improve the knowledge of sensing PFAS in water samples’ environmental context, 2) design sensing strategies for the detection of micro- and nano-plastics (MPs&NPs) in water sources, 3) develop novel functionalised interfaces for selective detection of water parasitic and bacterial pathogens, 4) create advanced modelling tools for predictive monitoring of environmental emerging contaminants.8 world-leading research teams with expertise in analytical chemistry (ICRA), chemical sensing (DCU Water Institute), sensing technologies (TYNDALL), microbiology and parasitology (USC), nanomaterials (UBA, CNR), and advanced modelling (URJC, UU) from 5 countries (Ireland, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) have joined efforts to create this proposal. AMORE aims to produce significant advancement in sensing PFAs, MPs and NPs, cryptosporidium and bacteria in water, focusing on relevant EU and UK case studies.
