Цел на проекта
The collision and subsequent suturing of oceanic terranes to continental margins during orogeny is a well documented feature of modern orogens. However, the recognition of oceanic terranes in older orogens has proved to be problematic due to the often ambiguous nature of their faunal, sedimentological and geochemical signatures. In cases where the convergence between these various elements is predominantly latitudinal the palaeomagnetic technique can prove successful. I therefore propose to carry out palaeomagnetic studies in five possible oceanic terranes in the European Caledonides with a view to: (1) Identifying those which are truly oceanic and (2) Constructing separate terrane drift-histories for these oceanic terranes. These studies will not only yield new constraints on the evolution of the European Caledonides but will also test models of terrane accretion, hence contributing to global issues of crustal evolution.
