This project will study the effect of size and wear of the molar trituration surfaces on food assimilation rates in Red deer, and will analyse their relationships with fitness in Soay sheep. Hypotheses: (1) In an attempt to compensate for increased molar wear, individuals increase chewing and rumination rate as a possible mechanism for sustaining their chewing efficiency. (2) A large trituration surface improves the chewing efficiency and food assimilation rate and this influences in their fitness. The influence of trituration surface area and molar wear on individual fitness will be studied in the Soay sheep population of the Hirta island (St. Kilda archipelago). And to known the relationships between molar wear and assimilation efficiency an experiment will be carried out with Red deer in MLURI's Glensaugh research station.
