The feasibility of functional surface coatings prepared by metal accumulating microorganisms should be investigated in an interdisciplinary research project (biology - physics). A lot of well working and highly sophisticated physical and chemical surface coating processes such as PVD, CVD and galvanic methods are already known. However, all of these methods have their specific disadvantages. New additional coating techniques and materials e.g. biological techniques would be highly desireable. Some bacteria are capable of binding large amounts of metal ions. Metal binding bacteria find already practical applications in hydrometallurgy for the leaching of metal and the treatment of acid mine drainage, clean up of sewage and lakes contaminated with heavy metal ions, others play a significant role in microbial induced corrosion. Also known are magnetotactic bacteria. They have an inherent magnetic moment, which enables them to orient themselves in an externally magnetic field. If these bacteria could be encouraged to grow on a suitably prepared surface, one may have a way to produce useful surface coatings -- possibly even metallic ones. Fundamental physical and biological properties relevant for the functionality of the microbially produced coatings should be investigat
