Research objectives and content This research project is based on 2D multichannel seismic reflection data from the Rockall continental margin and on a new data set, which will be acquired during an innovative two-ship experiment in summer 1996. The experiment is specially designed to record seismic arrivals from potentially oil-bearing sediments beneath extensive layers of basaltic lava. The main objectives of the proposed project are to image the structure of the basalts and of the sediments beneath them, and to identify hydrocarbon-relevant stratigraphic features. The innovative aspect of the project consists in the combined application of advanced seismic processing techniques, such as wavelet processing, complex trace analysis, pre-stack depth migration and tomography, to achieve optimal results from the seismic data and to accomplish the above objectives. The adaptation of tomographic techniques to marine seismic data of this particular two-ship geometry will also open up new areas of methodological investigation. New insights into the deeper structure of the Rockall continental margin are also expected, which will advance our understanding of the interplay between rifting, magmatism, subsidence and sediment accumulation in potentially hydrocarbon-rich terrains. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Seismic tomography is a technique with a large variety of applications in Geosciences and engineering. It is used to detect seismic velocity anomalies in the structures of interest. Training in this technique would considerably widen the scientific research possibilities of the applicant, both in academia and industry. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The two-ship experiment will be conducted by Amerada Hess Ltd in co-operation with Professor R. S. White, FRS, of the Marine Geophysics Group at the Bullard Laboratories, Cambridge University. The applicant will be working together with the scientific staff of this oil company. The results of the proposed project will be required for hydrocarbon assessment, and will be used to develop imaging techniques for future exploration in the area.
