Research objectives and content The aim of this research is the study of high nonnormality in coupled physical problems by means of the tools from PRECISE. PRECISE is a toolbox under MATLAB which offers a variety of software tools to assess the quality of numerical methods and software. High nonnormality can occur in Physics and Technology whenever there exists a strong coupling between different phenomena, giving rise to physical instability. Some physical problems arising from industry for which numerical methods proved convergent in exact arithmetic fail to converge in finite precision will be analysed studying the capability of the tool PRECISE to investigate such unstable computation. we have retained the two following application: Vlasov-Poisson model for the simulation of television tubes resonating structures in diffraction models Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) We expect to gain more deeper knowledge of nonnormality and to answer open question about the numerical solution of some difficult problems arising from industry. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The applications chosen correspond to an industrial need. Electromagnetism appeared to be a domain of choice. This results more specifically from many discussions with the Central Research Laboratory of Thomson (LCR, Thomson-CSE;).
