Research objectives and content The aim of the project is to develop techniques to simulate icing on aircraft surfaces. Current mathematical models have limitations due to the assumptions made in the heat transfer and droplet rebounds thus resulting in an incorrect prediction of ice shapes. The research studies shall consist of the following: 1. Experimental measurements of heat transfer on realistic ice shapes. This will be undertaken using hot film probes and naphthalene sublimation technique will be used to measure the convective heat transfer in a subsonic wind tunnel. A theoretical model will then be formulated into the appropriate form, to be incorporated into an existing ice prediction code. 2. Experimental measurements of water droplet rebounds.. A droplet generator will be designed to produce a continuous stream of water monodispersed droplets, which will collide, with specified targets in a subsonic wind tunnel. The rebound velocity and sizes will be recorded with a Phase Doppler Particle Anemometer. Theoretical models will be formulated to be incorporated into the ice prediction code. 3. Simulation of ice build-up on a NACA0012 aerofoil and comparison with experiments undertaken in an icing tunnel Advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques will be used together with the results of the experimental work to design an accurate 3-D ice accretion model Note: The intended programme complements a U.K. programme but looks at academic improvement to existing technologies which is over and above the contracted objectives already agreed. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Short courses on Laser Anemometry (at UMIST-GB) and on CFD techniques (at VKI-BE) are planned as well as hands-on training on Phase Doppler Particle Anemometry at Rolls-Royce PLC (Derby-GB) This courses and training will give me the opportunity to learn about state-of-the art technologies which not only will be relevant to the project but also will constitue a 'plus' for my career as well as carrying research in an international environment Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Rolls-Royce PLC, British Aerospace (Operations) Ltd as part of a national project: ICECREMO which aims to provide the U.K. aerospace industry with a sophisticated and accurate ice accretion model which can cope with a wide range of different products and icing conditions. This will provide a strategic tool for the specification, design and testing and certification of ice protection equipment for civil aircraft
