Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content The proposed research has two main aims. First to establish a P.C. based ' Virtual laboratory ' in the area of computer simulation of surface science phenomena with particular reference to Thin Film Deposition and its analysis using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy techniques. This facility will complement the experimental techniques currently used in the Fachhochschule. The second aim is to use this new facility during the award to carry out and supervise computational modelling in the current research areas of the laboratory, namely, hardness quantification of different materials using nanoindentation and the growth of biological thin films. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The training content will be to equip staff and students in the Surface Science laboratory at Wildau with some modern research software and to train the staff and students in using the software and applying it in conjunction with experiment in the interpretation of surface science phenomena. A simulation summer school is planned as part of this work. It is also expected that in the longer term it will be possible to set up a facility for making computer generated movies which can be used for educational purposes. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The surface science laboratory at Wildau has links with a number of industrial companies especially ones which are interested in the deposition of hard coatings and in surface roughness measurements. It is expected that the simulation techniques that will be established will be useful to these companies.
