Цел на проекта

Research objectives and content The project examines rainfall fields in the context of current multifractal theory. New theory will be developed to facilitate the reconstruction of realistic rainfall fields in space and time from sampled or averaged measurements for use in climate and hydrological modelling. The work will improve the spatio-temporal representation of rainfall and this will play a key rtle in the advancement of global climate and rainfall-runoff modelling, both of which are important in climate change prediction and advanced methods of flood frequency estimation. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Initially relevant areas of multifractal mathematics are invistigated, particularly the geometrical and analytical aspects. An appreciation of the hydrological problems and the existing multifractal work in this area is gained. Then the theory is applied and developed as necessary to construct disaggregation/interpolation models consistent with observed multifractal spectra. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The project is a coopertive research project (CASE) with the Institute of Hydrology, Wallingford, Oxfordshire. 4-6 weeks each year will be spent in this institute in order to gain access to data and an appreciation of the hydrological aspects of the project.
