Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content The overall purpose of this project is a comparative analysis of local urban policy in Belfast and Glasgow. The aim is to investigate its formulation and implementation and to assess its outcome. Local and supra-local variables influencing urban policy will be identified and their significance assessed. Conclusions will be drawn concerning the effectiveness of these policies and lessons to be learned for policy makers. The paramount interest Iying in the local processes, an inductive approach is taken. Local urban policy will be scrutinised in two different dimensions. The horizontal one encompasses the local interplay of various state agents (both the lower (LAs) and upper tier authorities (Northern Ireland Office, Scottish Office). Their policies will be examined and related to each other. The vertical dimension embraces the supra-local policy context, both a national and a supra-national one. Local policy will be analysed comparatively with reference to policy formulated and implemented by upper national tiers and supra-national ones (EU policies). Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The emphasis of training is on qualitative methods. Benefit is envisioned particularly from the task of implementing interviews. My interview experiences have so far centred around samples of the general public. Methodological expertise with a markedly different group of interviewees (politicians) will be gained. Moreover, the inductive and iterative character of the research will contain important novel training aspects.
