Накратко на български
Нов биоразградим композит от полимери и биостъкло се тества за създаване на костни пластини. Това би позволило постепенното прехвърляне на натоварването към костта и би избегнало нуждата от втора операция за премахване на металните импланти.

Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content To date, osteosynthesis has been achieved through metallic parts but the use of biodegradable bone plates would be of a great interest as it would ensure progressive transfer of stresses to the bone and obviate a second surgical procedure that is always uncomfortable for the patient and expensive for the society. Polyesters of the poly-a- hydroxy-acid type were recognised early as serious candidates because of their biocompatibility and controllable degradation rate. However, they cannot provide sufficient stiffness and mechanical resistance for high load applications. The resulting idea is to develop a composite material with fibre reinforcement of the polymer matrix in order to increase the mechanical properties of the material. In this research, we will draw up a composite compound based on a poly(lactic) acid and poly(glycolic) acid matrix reinforced with fibres of a soluble bioglass system, so as to obtain a totally resorbable material. We will study the resorption rates in vivo and in vitro of the material in function of its composition. We will also determine the structural and the mechanical properties of the material. Eventually, we will study the optimisation of the mechanisation process of the plates in order to obtain a material economically competitive. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) It should be pointed out that the use of a wide range of sophisticated techniques, all of them available in the same centre, will be of enormous interest. Besides the possibility of the study of the in vivo behaviour of the material implanting specimens in rats thanks to the collaboration between the host institution and the department of traumatology of the University Hospital of Belivitge (Barcelona) will be highly relevant to examine the suitability of the material. A great impact of the project is expected since the development of an economically competitive biodegradable composite material would be of a great interest for the internal fixation of bone fractures.
