Research objectives and content The past few years have seen an explosion of interest in the physics of (e,2e) and related processes largely thanks to support from the EU through the SCIENCEand HCM programmes. The object of this proposal is to allow one of the most successful of the recent Ph.D.'s in the field, (winner of the 1996 Ehrhardt prize), to move between two nodes of the existing HCM Network (CHRXCT930350) to acquire new skills and methods. We will jointly study more sophisticated ionisation processes than have been dealt with up to now. We will consider the ionisation of neutral atoms with particular reference to those processes where more than one target electrons are envolved. We will study: I. Excitation-ionisation i.e. processes where as a result of an electron impact one electron is ionised while a second bound electron is left in an excited state. II. (e,3e), two electrons are ionised by an electron impact III. (y,2e), photo-double ionisation IV.Compton processes e.g. (y,ey'), (y,2ey') Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The theoretical methods of the Metz group are entirely complementary to the Cambridge group from which the applicant comes. It is envisaged the applicant will be further trained in the latest computational and mathematical techniques and that these will be applied to a number of problems of genuine physical interest. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) No direct industrial involvement is envisaged, but it is our belief that the research will be of value to European Industry in the long term.
