Research objectives and content To investigate the magneto-hydrodynamic jets and outflows from young stellar discs by computer simulation with an up-to-date MHD code, addressing in particular the following questions 1. Whether the colied magnetic field configuration established by differential rotation and flux freezing forms a jet which is (a) steady over many rotation times of the disc, and (b) stable against perturbations in the ambient medium and the disc. 2. What range of morphology can be produced by varying the initial conditions and parameters of the model. 3. How the disc composition and dynamics are affected by the jet-with particular reference to theories of the early evolution of planetary systems. 4. How jets and slow bipolar molecular outflows are related (e.g. whether the latter are also produced or driven by MHD processes in the circumstellar disc). Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Study for the Ph.D. degree, providing specific qualification for professional research in computational astrophysics and astronomy, The skills involved are also applicable in a wide range of academic and industrial fields, wherever high-level numerical or simulation techniques are required. In addition to research, the training will involve some taught courses and tutorial work.
