Накратко на български
Кристалите от сол в атмосферата се изследват, за да се разбере как водата променя повърхността им и взаимодействието им с азотен диоксид. Това помага за по-доброто разбиране на химичните реакции, които протичат в въздуха.

Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content The proposed research project focuses primarily on two topics. The first objective is to understand the solvation of sodium chloride crystals by water molecules in large clusters. This part of the study involves investigations of phase transitions of dissolved sodium chloride to crystalline form in the presence of water as temperature and humidity of the environment vary. Studies of the system at the microscopic level will allow to examine the morphology of the sodium chloride microcrystal surface and bulk in the presence of adsorbed water and the structure and physical state of the adsorbed water. The second objective of this research is to investigate how the presence of water on the sodium chloride microcrystals affects the mechanism and rate of nitrogen dioxide - sodium chloride reactions. The role of sodium nitrate in the mechanism of the reaction will be examined. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The training aspects of this research project involve analytical and computational studies of activated processes and phase transitions. Studies of Monte Carlo and lattice gas methods, which are areas of expertise in prof. D. Frenkel's group, will complement my knowledge on activated processes and phase transitions. The experience acquired through collaboration with experimental groups at AMOLF will provide closer links between my computational studies and practical applications.
