Research objectives and content This research considers resonant phenomena encountered in biological and physical systems. Results of previous investigations concerning ultrasonic manipulation of cells and gas oscillations in closed tubes are reviewed. Of practical interest are mammalian cell aggregation and moisture removal and drying processes in pulse combuters. Investigation of the effect of the occurrence of transverse oscillations in acoustic resonators such as wave tubes and resonance tubes and its influence on particle separation is one of the goals of the proposed project. Extension of the results obtained in IE and IL concerning resonant oscillations in nonreacting fluids to reacting gases is the main goal of the present project. The objective of the proposed research includes the analysis of the drying efficiency by an oscillating acoustic flow. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The elaboration of the proposed project will give the opportunity to develop the Irish expertise in existing areas such as acoustic intersections and to develop expertise in Ireland in new areas such as effects of acoustic waves on combustion processes and multiphase mixtures. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Investigation of acoustic interactions with combustion processes and suspensions is of importance for developments of piston-driven engines, pulse combusters and acoustic separators.
