Накратко на български
Механизмите на частично окисляване на метан върху повърхности от платина и родий се анализират чрез молекулярни лъчи. Това помага за разбирането на фундаментални процеси, които имат технологично значение за индустрията.

Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content A dual supersonic molecular beam surface scattering system has been developed in Cambridge, and recently successfully applied to the determination of the mechanism of an important industrial process, ammonia oxidation over platinum. In the proposed work I plan to exploit this system to study the mechanisms associated with the potentially important catalytic partial oxidation of methane to a carbon monoxide/hydrogen mixture, over Pt and Rh single crystal surfaces. The fundamental processes methane dissociative adsorption on clean and on partially oxidised surfaces will be investigated over a wide range of crystal temperatures and molecular translational energies. The reverse process, of oxygen dissociation on clean and partially methyl covered surfaces, will also be investigated, prior to an investigation of the steady state reaction between methane and oxygen beams, again over a wide range of surface temperatures and molecular translational energies. Finally, the work will be extend to the surfaces of platinum/rhodium alloy single crystals. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) I will be joining a large and active surface science group at Cambridge. In addition to the specific training in surface science experimental and theoretical techniques, I expect that this exposure to a wide range of related activities will be broadly beneficial. The work is of a fundamental nature, but with significant potential technological impact. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The Cambridge research group has close links with a number of national and multinational companies, including BP, Johnson Matthey, Shell and Unilever. Shell has a particular interest in this project at Cambridge.
