Research objectives and content The objectives of this research are to design and fabricate a vertical cavity surface emitting laser using ultra clean molecular beam epitaxial gallium-arsenide (GaAs) growth technology, and to use this laser structure to obtain blue light emission based on the second-harmonic generation inside the cavity. This will be achieved by exploiting the non-linear optical properties of strained GaAs grown in the (311)B and (411)A directions and by using Bragg reflector technology. A wide range of high resolution optical spectroscopy, electron and scanning probe microscopy will be carried out on laser sub-structures in order to ensure that the molecular beam epitaxy growth is optimised for the device. The mode structure, threshold behaviour and second-harmonic generation of the laser will, as well, be characterised. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Small surface em emitting blue light source on GaAs substrate should be obtained and because of the nature of the geometry of the device, ease of coupling into more sophisticated optical systems will be ensured. The project will then demonstrate a prototype technology for blue emission which can, for example, be further developed into large systems for information storage by optical means. Blue emission from semiconductors is of prime generic importance for data storage, displays, projection systems, military needs..etc... All the experimental techniques used in this research and the interaction with industry will be of obvious benefit and provide training in a field of growing importance for Europe. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Links have been established with the GEC company which has a major interest in the manufacture of optically based systems for data storage, processing and retrieval. Hewlett-Packard Japan is, as well, working on the same materials that are been grown in UMIST by Dr M. MISSOUS.
