Research objectives and content The image quality in Positron Emission Tomography and Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography is of great importance for diagnosis and medical research. Some methods have been separately developed for PET and SPECT to correct the effects of attenuation and scattering of emitted photons. Since current methods show different limitations, a new implementation is needed which accounts for the situation in 3D imaging in the body. The key feature of this proposal is the extension of scatter corrections for both PET and SPECT by means of Monte- Carlo simulations and 3D data acquisition protocols. In this project, measurements will be performed which simulate the situation in clinical SPECT and PET studies. With these data, different algorithms can be tested. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The goal is to develop new extended scatter correction methods in SPECT as well as in PET: Practicable solutions must be implemented, characterised by measurements and connected to the attenuation corrections which already exist. Improved image contrast and qualification of tracer distribution will be the results. This project will be performed in a research group investigating several aspects of improvements in medical imaging. Therefore, instrumentation, reconstruction and other correction methods will be part of the training. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
