Research objectives and content The aim of this project is to investigate the desorption of molecules from surfaces induced by electronic interactions of these molecules with slow multiply charged ions. We will perform experiments on a layer of C60 << bucky balls >> on a metal surface. To understand this electronic desorption, we have to understand the dynamics of neutralization and deexcitation of the incident projectile ions at the surface, e.g. the formation of hollow atoms. Hence, in a fist step, we plan to study the emission of slow electrons by the deexciting hollow atoms formed at the surface, using high resolution electron spectroscopy. In a second step, we will analyse the desorbed C60-ions or ionised C60-fragments which have been formed during the ion-surface interaction. The influence of the workfunction of the metal surface and the charge state of the projectiles will be investigated. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This research work will give me the possibility to use several modern experimental techniques such as ultra-high-vacuum techniques, surface preparation and analysis techniques, electron spectroscopy and computer control of experiments. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Presently there is no direct links with industry, but it is well-known that several industrial laboratories are investigating the possibility of controlled surface damage by ion impact.
