Research objectives and content The aim of this project is to develop an induction motor model suitable for the simulation of the relevant physical phenomena which may affect the stator current spectrum. To develop this model, the circuit- oriented approach has been chosen in order to modellize the induction motor as a rotating transformer. In this way, the aspects which may be considered suitable for exact modelling are related to the magnetic core, insulating material and winding geometry. Then, electromagnetic theory must be applied to define the most important physical phenomena to be studied. The final model must be tested simulating failures experimentally achieved as winding short-circuits or cut- sets and transient voltage externally produced for the stator, and broken bars or rings, the most common failures for the rotor. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results will indicate the application domain of the model. Then, techniques and methods for monitoring and the diagnosis of induction motor operation may be treated with this model, limiting destructive experimental tests commonly used in this research area. The induction motor model will be developed with the circuit-oriented package EMTP (ElectroMagnetic Transients Program) and a particular simulation methodology proper for this study will be applied. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This project proposes to develop a modelling technique applied to induction motor failure studies. In diagnostics methods using simulation tools, the main faults can be assessed using spectral or time-domain analysis. With this technique, maintenance and operation conditions of electrical equipment can be better observed leading to cost-less operation in industry.
