Research objectives and content The basis of this project is the fact that the permafrost regions of northern Eurasia are being subjected to increasing levels of oil pollution, yet very little is known about the distribution and behaviour of oil spills in these areas. The objective of this project is to develop a new and powerful method of characterising oil spills on frozen ground. This method will be combined with the results of linked research in Canada to help define new remediation strategies. These objectives will be met through an evaluation of the potential of spaceborne and airborne remote sensing data and methods to characterise high-latitude terrain (topography, soil, vegetation, thermal regime) before, during and after an oil spill, as well as characterisation of oil spills themselves. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Training content and potential impact will be very high. This is a virtually unexplored application of remote sensing, with large scientific and industrial potential, and the applicant's technical expertise will be broadened substantially in a number of areas, especially familiarity with radar remote sensing. A thorough grounding in the state of the art will be provided by attendance at an international conference to be held in Cambridge in July 1997. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
