Накратко на български
Компресирането на потоци от данни в ATM мрежи позволява пренасянето на повече информация през съществуващите връзки. Това повишава ефективността на мрежата и помага за по-оптимално управление на комуникациите.

Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content One of the main characteristics of an ATM network is that its switches should be fairly simple and inexpensive. As a result, a significant part of its cost is in the cost of the links. Hence by increasing the network traffic we can send over a given link, we will certainly increase the effectiveness of the whole network. A way of increasing this traffic is to send compressed ATM cells. This idea, although it seems very simple, is new and it may prove to be very important. Our project will investigate this subject and implement at first a prototype and then a commercial version of a device which would do this compression on-line. It will also investigate the problem of call admission in a network which will use this compression scheme. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This project will help me gaining a great amount of knowledge in my field, and learning about other aspects of Computer Science. I will also learn to satisfy deadlines, and to work without close supervision. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) By compressing the ATM streams, and finding the optimal rules for call admission control we will be able to deliver communications in a more effective way than the current technologies do, something very attractive for the network equipment providers
