Research objectives and content The mechanism through which fast moving pulsars are created and ejected by core collapse supernovae is a long standing problem. Recent promising work suggests that a possible mechanism involves asymmetric supernova explosions, where the asymmetry is generated at the microphysical level through neutrino interactions in the strong magnetic field of the core of t} supernova. Only one particular interaction of this class has been considered in detail in the literature, and it is not clear that this is the most important effect. It is proposed to make a more complete set of theoretical and numerical calculations l investigating neutrino driven anisotropies due to magnetic fields in the cores of supernovae, including both neutrino production and transport. Given their expertise and current activity in the fields relevant to this work, the Max-Planck- Institute for Astrophysics is an ideal host institution. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The work detailed in this proposal will provide a quantitative estimate of the effect of magnetic fields on neutrinos in the con of supernovae. Through collaboration with Dr. Janka, Dr. Raffelt, Prof. Hillebrandt, and Prof. Mueller, the candidate will obtain increased expertise in the theory of core collapse supernovae, especially neutrino transport; training in the discipline o numerical astrophysics; and further development of skills in the area of finite temperature field theory.
