Research objectives and content The proposed research addresses the development of cure and thermal monitoring techniques in the context of manufacture of thermosetting composites parts. Measurements from cure sensors and thermocouples placed in non- critical locations within the curing component will be used to monitor the state of cure in some critical parts of the structure, where the presence of embedded sensors would be unacceptable. A solution procedure of the inverse heat transfer problem will be developed to enable accurate spatial mapping performed using the localised sensor data. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The candidate will complete part of his PhD study through this project. He will gain experience in composites manufacture by autoclave and resin transfer moulding (RTM) routes. He will acquire knowledge of specialist theoretical tools, fitting him directly for future employment as a modelling-monitoring expert in the composites industry. Links with industry / industrial relevance The host group collaborates with British Aerospace plc. and Short Brothers plc. on projects concerning the application of dielectric cure monitoring in composites manufacturing. This link, plus a close relationship with INASCO HELLAS (Dr. George Maistros is a Technical Director of INASCO and Visiting Fellow of Cranfield University), will ensure industrial relevance at all stages of the development.
