Research objectives/content Experimental research on hydraulics and depositional mechanisms of highdensity sediment gravity flows (high density turbidity currents (HDTC) and debris flows) is of key importance in understanding the dispersal of sediment into the deep ocean and interpretation of thick 'structureless'sandstone bodies in the ancient deep-marine record, a subject of current debate in science and industry. This research proposal aims at testing published hypotheses and quantifying hydraulic processes by: 1. investigating turbulence modulation in relation to suspended sediment concentration and flow field characteristics in experimental HDTC's. 2.studying physical processes controlling sediment deposition from experi- mental HDTC's. The experiments will be performed with a unique set of high-resolution instrumentation at the universities of Leeds/Utrecht. Training content The applicant has a broad knowledge of deep-marine depositional systems and sediment dynamics in flowing water. Training from the universities of Leeds/ Utrecht, both retaining an unrivalled suite of facilities and research groups in Europe, is required to combine these research fields into an experimental study of hydraulics and depositional mechanisms of HDTC's. Links with industry/industrial relevance Current industrially-funded research at U. Leeds provides a unique link with many research groups within industry who are currently exploring and attemp- ting to interpret HDTC deposits for reservoir properties.
