Research objectives and content The objective of the project is to investigate X-wave solutions to the wave equation and apply them to medical ultrasound imaging in order to achieve increased framerates for image processing. X-waves represent a newly discovered type of ultrasound beam which has some interesting properties for imaging. They have primarily been developed by Lu and Greenleaf from the Mayo Clinic, USA. Lu has recently moved to the University of Toledo, USA continuing this activity. These beams not only have limited-diffraction properties, but also more importantly Lu has developed these beams such that they may be used for 2D and 3D imaging at very high framerates. This is an important medical application into which the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo is already engaged in research with the industrial partners Thomson (France) and Vingmed Sound (Norway) in the European Union ESPRIT project 'Real-time 3D Ultrasound Imaging System with Advanced Transducer Arrays' (EU acronym NICE). The NICE project addresses the primary problem of real-time 3D ultrasound: How to make the 2D array and beamformer and how to reduce the number of channels as much as possible. The project proposed here will investigate the second problem: How to achieve high framerates, i.e. the real-time aspect of 3D ultrasound, and will investigate in detail one of the proposed solutions to that problem. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The primary training objective is to familiarise the researcher with state-of-the-art medical ultrasound imaging techniques in 2 and 3 dimensions using recently developed X-waves. The researcher wishes to develop a career path in medical signal processing and the main benefit is to effect this transition through a combination of in-house training and a carefully planned research programme involving collaboration with other European partners through the ESPRIT project NICE. The overall expected impact beyond the personal career development of the researcher is to contribute strongly towards the research activities of the host institution and its European collaborative partners in medical ultrasound imaging. Research results will be presented via appropriate conferences and journals.
