Research objectives and content The research project that the applicant would undertake is part of the programmecalled Compact 3Lbor' Solenoid (CMS), which refers to the large detector system to be built in one of the beam crossing points at the Large Hadror' Collidler (LHC). The applicant's project is the study of the possibility of finding evidences of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking m.echanisms alternative to the Standard Model by C3IS. simulating the production and detection ot new gauge bosons or of non-Standard Model production rates for the known gauge bosons. These mechanisms. are based on low energy Lagrangians. in which the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking is realized by interactions similar to the strong force. They are considered a valid alternative to solve some of the problems of the Standard Model. The study would be carried out using the main simulation tools of CMS a FORTRAN code called CMSIM, being currently developed at CERN. The project of the applicant consists therefore in participating actively to this effort, both proposing a relevant and modern physics subject and helping in tile development of the software tools needed for the study of this and different problems of high energy physics in CNIS. Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact) The use of simulation and data analysis software is an important part of the training of a physicist working in high energy physics. both for the intensive use of corrlputer concepts and technologies and for its underlying physical contents. The applicant expects from this work to acquire the fundamental knowledge and the common language needed to contribute effectively in his (hopeful) future involvement in high energy physics. Links with industry i industrial relevance LHC represents one of the largest efforts of the CERN member states (most of which belongs to the European Community), and several European industries participate to this effort. The project of the applicant is indirectly but strongly linked with industrial developement as long as his work would help making use of technologies that are intensively being developed for this purpose.
