Research objectives and content In this project the nuclear structure physics of the neutron deficient N = Z nuclei in the A 70-80 region will become subject of detailed gamma-ray spectroscopy, in some cases for the first time. The richness of different nuclear structure information which can be found in this mass region is important for the progress of experimental nuclear physics and a great challenge for their theoretical interpretation. Since the nuclei of interest can presently only be populated with extremely low cross-sections (or not at all) the use of radioactive beams is a necessary prerequisite for an increased production rate, which in some cases will lead to the first ever access to these nuclei. These studies will be realised with the gamma-ray spectroscopy group of the DAPNIA/SPhN at CEA Saclay. This group has a well known experience in gamma-ray spectroscopy and is presently preparing for nuclear structure studies using the radioactive beams from the 'Systeme de Production d' ions Radioactifs et d'Acceleration en Ligne (SPIRAL) facility at GANIL (Caen, France). Currently a new highly effcient and highly segmented gamma-e, spectrometer for nuclear spectroscopy (EXOGAM) is under development. Working with EXOGAM at SPIRAL wil give a unique possibility to work with the most recent detector technology and extend my earlier experience with (composite) germanium detectors of the first generation. Training content Nuclear Structure studies with the new generation of segmented germanium detectors. Experience with the new technology of radioactive beams Expertise in different experimental methods, such as Coulomb excitation and transfer reactions The basic knowledge of nuclear structure physics will be significantly extended Links with industry / industrial relevance The development of segmented germanium detectors is performed in close collaboration with industry. Only the joint experience of both sides guarantees the successful development of such a high-performan' instrument. The knowledge gathered in this project will also be beneficial for the manufacturers, as examples in ti past have clearly demonstrated.
