Research objectives and content The objective of the research project is two-fold. Principally, the recent idea of case-based decision making which combines case-based reasoning and decision theory should be developed further from a theoretical point of view. Moreover, the usefulness of this approach as a problem solving technique in artificial intelligence should be investigated. Particularly, the theoretical results obtained in the first part of the project should be used as a basis for the design of control structures for autonomous agents. Indeed, case-based decision making may provide a useful alternative theory of rationality and resource-bounded reasoning for (time/knowledge) limited agents. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Within this research project I intend to specialize in the field of ,,uncertain reasoning and decision making' and to qualify further by doing the basic research for the so-called ,,Habilitation.' Particularly, I would like to learn about methods for utilizing case-based reasoning for decision making and about using fuzzy logic and decision theory as foundations of case-based reasoning. These questions concerning the relation of case-based reasoning, fuzzy logic, and decision theory are current research topics of the host group. Moreover, doing research in some different (especially foreign) scientific environment will contribute exceptionally to my experience and my future career. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The applicational part of the project will be worked on in cooperation with C-LAB (Cooperative Computing & Communication Laboratory), which is the joint R & D institute of the University of Paderborn and the Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG.
