Research objectives and content In a galaxy cluster there are two different kinds of interaction: Galaxy-cluster interactions and galaxy-galaxy interactions. Both lead to changes in the global properties of the galaxies. Observationally, it turns out that the apparent galaxy structures are functions of their respective location within the cluster. Outer galaxies are less disturbed than inner ones. Thus galaxies entering the cluster suffer from severe interactions with the cluster environment. This fact will be used to distinguish and model the influences of these interactions on the galaxy's gas content. Furthermore, we plan to study the influence on the other components of the galaxy, as well as influences on the ensemble of galaxies as a whole. We will model galaxies-by means of a 3 component N-body code including self-gravitation and inelastic coIlisions. Thus we will be able to study the interactions described above in detail in order to draw new conclusions about the formation and development of galaxies in clusters and maybe of galaxies in general. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) At the same time, this project will deal with the modelling of galaxies and the reduction and evaluation of observational data. These results will be published in scientific journals. They will be also made available in colloquia to other scientists and students. Furthermore, the so developed code can be used in a modified form to solve related problems. For this purpose the code will be put into the public domain.
