Research objectives and content Magnetism in ultrathin films and alloys are technologically very important because of their potential in a number of data storage related applications. In order to understand and optimize the magnetic properties of | such films, the geometrical structure on the atomic scale and the growth must be understood. In this proposal, we propose to study the detailed geometrical structure on the atomic scale and growth of Co/Pt and Fe/Cu utrathin films and alloys by using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), low temperature STM and a variety of other surface science techniques. By utilizing the unique experience of the host institution to achieve chemical contrast in STM, the interpretation of the STM data from these complex systems should be facilitated. The goal of the proposed investigations is to relate changes in the detailed geometrical structure at the surface or the interface, with changes of the magnetic properties of the thin film or alloy. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The proposed project would allow the applicant to expand his knowledge of experimental techniques and phenomena in surface science. He will also profit from being member of one of the leading groups in atomic-scale studies of metal surfaces. The training would continue to be of benefit to the applicant after the project has finished. Furthermore, the applicant has experience from high resolution core level spectroscopy and surface x-ray diffraction. The proposed research would allow him to integrate this knowledge into an European project. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
