Накратко на български
Разпределението на редките елементи в долната земна кора се анализира чрез скали в Алпите и числени модели. Това помага да се разбере как се движат веществата в земните пластове и колко топлинна енергия се отделя там.

Цел на проекта
Research objectives and content The Ivrea-Verbano Zone (IVZ) in the Western Alps reveals an important episode of magmatic underplating and provides an ideal opportunity to test geochemical effects caused by slow consolidation of lower-crustal intrusions. The project consists of (1) the determination of trace-elements concentrations from the IVZ intrusion using a spark-source mass spectrometer (SSMS) at the MPI in Mainz and (2) the elaboration of a numerical model of percolation of interstitial liquid. SSMS with a channeltron array of multi-ion counting system is a new technique that allows analysis of trace-elements in a large number of samples. The innovative aspect consists in combining a models with a sampling profiles, thus considering the IVZ intrusion as a 'natural laboratory' in the lower crust to test effects of melt percolation. Expected results are a better understanding of the composition of the lower crust, the behaviour of underplated intrusions, the late-stage igneous differentiation and the migration of trace elements to different crustal levels. Upward migration of U and Th is expected as a consequence of the compaction of the cumulates. New insights about how these trace elements can be enriched or depleted in the lower crust may give constraints on radiogenic heat production in the lower crust. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) 1- Learning of new techniques (SSMS combinined with channeltron) of mass spectrometry to determine very low concentrations in very small amounts of sample. The knowledge of this technique will constitute an analytical background applicable in many Earth Sciences, including Environmental Science, and will constitute an important training experience with the aim to improve analytical facilities and methodologies existing in the country of origin of the applicant (Italy). 2- Learning computational techniques useful to investigate geological problems. 3- Interactions with other researchers at the MPI. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) None
