Research objectives and content To investigate whether it is possible to use holographic optical components to increase the numerical aperture for which it is possible to make blazed concave diffraction gratings. The steps involved are: l . Record an holographic condensing mirror by passing one wavefront through the inclined concave substrate. 2. Set up a standing wave interferometer incorporating the holographic component. 3. Determine the maximum numerical aperture that can be achieved 4. Make a series of gratings with different spatial frequencies 5. Measure the performance of the gratings as a function of wavelength in various grating mountings. 6. Assess the advantages and shortfalls of the method for scientific and commercial spectrometers 7. Attempt to replicate gratings on the edges of planar optical wavegindes 8.Manufacture Manufacture planar waveguide spectrometer. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The research will serve to transfer the technology for the manufacture of gratings to the university and so extend their existing expertise. It will also acquaint them with some genuine industrial needs and provide a useful contact with an industrial user. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The research is a highly relevant extension of 'holographic' grating technology developed by the applicant and used by Pye Unicam for twenty years. The company will provide consultancy on design, measurement and assessment of the results and guidance for further research. The research also extends naturally into the university's existing work on planar waveguide sensors and multiplexers which is itself of great relevance to industry.
