Research objectives and content This proposal aims at developing a second language communication learning software based on an iconic input interface. Its postulates are: first. that learning a language from within, by observing the mechanisms of its linguistic expressions, is a more generic approach than comparing them with those of another language; second, that a learner should not be expected to know a priori the syntactic structures of the language he is learning. Hence the software applies the principle of semantic analysis of icons to tutoring communication. It consists in an interface displaying icons (representing cross-linguistic semantic primitives), with which the user may compose a message; a semantic analysis module. which gives an interpretation to the message with no regard to syntax; a lexical choice interface. allowing the user to refine the meaning he wishes to transmit; and a generation module in German. Such software could prove particularly useful for immigrants or illiterate people. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project would allow the applicant to acquire experience in managing complex linguistic data, while disseminating novel techniques rooted in the field of cognitive science. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The latter techniques were developed by the applicant in an industrial research laboratory. A small company is involved in the project's evaluation and industrialisation.
