Research objectives and content Saline stress in agricultural crops is a major challenge to plant biotechnology. Although a genetic background to stress tolerance exists in halophytes, this is not available to breeders of crop plants. An application of biotechnological advances requires the knowledge of target genes responsible of salt tolerance. With the present proposal, we pretend to use the generated mutant lines by the host group plus other T-DNA insertional collections to identify new mutant alleles relevant to salt tolerance. The experience of the group in this topic will be very valuable in order to circumvent difficulties encountered in previous screenings. We expect to optimize the screening procedure, to use more specific selective agents for better discrimination between osmotic and ionic toxicity, and to be able to establish a feasible screening procedure at the seedling stage.By this means we hope to define new halotolerant mutants probably due to loss of function (hypomorfic) which might serve in the future to design biotechnological strategies with other plant species of agronomical interest to improve salt tolerance. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The knowledge of the host group in genetics and the accumulated experience with previous screenings forsalt tolerance makes this proposal a very interesting training for the applicant who has been involved in this research topic in the last six years with different biological systems. At the same time the experience of the applicant in this field could benefit the research of the group. It could be envisaged an impact at the long term in the design of biotechnological strategies for improvement of salt resistance in crop plants. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
