Research objectives and content Protocols for applying innovative solid-state NMR techniques such as REDOR and TEDOR to accurately measure internuclear distances will be developed for characterizing the structures of crystalline inorganic microporous solids. These techniques will be applicable to other advanced materials. Fluoride ion locations will be determined in a selection of high quality, as-synthesized zeolites and microporous aluminophosphates produced from non-alkaline, fluoride-containing media. Detailed information regarding fluoride ion environments and the roles these ions play during the syntheses will be obtained. Improved understanding of these framework structures and the guest species within their channels and pores will provide insight into the mechanisms of their catalytic activity, and ultimately result in enhanced synthetic methods and novel applications of these important materials. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Expertise will be transferred between members of the research team, and the group at ENSCMu will obtain valuable new techniques for characterizing advanced materials. Several young scientists will be trained in innovative analytical and synthetic methods. Instructional and supervisory roles will foster teaching and leadership skills. Existing inter-European and industrial collaborations will also be strengthened. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Numerous industrial processes currently exploit the kinds of crystalline inorganic microporous materials which will be characterized.
