Research objectives and content Two dimensional computer modelling of carbonate stratigraphies has been successfully achieved byHolloway 1.2 modelling group at Royal Holloway 1.2. This has been applied to, and has been shown to simulate startigraphic sections of both ancient rimmed carbonate shelves2 and carbonate ramps3. This approach however limited because it provides 2 dimensional solutions to structures that have a strong dimensional morphology with sediment accumulation being controlled by 3 dimensional processes sediment production, transport, deposition and compaction. This proposal is to develop, for the first time, a computer model for the 3 dimensional simulation carbonate platforms. The project will start with the development of computer models for production transport and deposition. To test the models, field data will be collected from a Jurassic carbonate ramp NE Spain that has been previously modelled in 2-D3. Data will be collected on 3 dimensional facies distribution, structure and morphology of depositional sequences, transport directions and compaction the basis of these data, models can then be further developed for application to other carbonate setting 1BOSENCE DWJ and WALTHAM, DA (1990): computer modelling the internal architecture of carbonate platforms. Sedimentology 42:75-94 Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Training during the course of the studentship will include attendance of the relevant units of the M 'Basin Analysis' at RHUL. The studentship will provide training in computer modelling and the simulation of complex geological stratigraphies, geological fieldwork and data collection. This training will provide added value in applying for a job in the hydrocarbon or hydrogeological industry where 3 dimensional models are in great demand. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The modelling group at Royal Holloway have an ongoing collaboration with the hydrocarbon industry their previous research in carbonate modelling has been funded in part by BP Exploration and Elf Caledonia Ltd.
