Research objectives and content Gas Microstrip Dectectors (MSGC) are devices which allow to measure with high precision the trajectory of a charged particle. The ionisation signal which is produced in the gas volume of the MSGC is amplified and collected by very fine metal strips placed on a thin glass substrate. At the Large Hadron Collider which is in construction at the European Center of Particle Physics, CERN, a large scale application of these detectors is foreseen because conventional wire chambers can not function in the very high radiation environment of the accelerator. To avoid that MSGC also suffer from radiation damage and electrical instabilities, the glass surface is coated with a thin conducting skin such as diamond-like materials, and the strip are made from gold. The research project proposed here will deal with the behavior of such substrates using varying surface compositions to find the optimum solution for the planned detectors. The research shall be carried out dominantly at the Institut fuer Experimentelle Kernphysik, Karlsruhe University, which offers appropriate laboratory equipment and an excellent means Of diagnosis (X-Ray and neutron beams). Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Even though this research is primarly oriented towards elementary particle physics, we will investigate the possibility of applications in industry and medecine. This will be facilitated by the fact that the institute is located inside a large research center (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe) and by ist good connection to the Frauenhofer-Gesellchaft in Braunschweig. Iks with industry / industrial relevance (22)
